Essential oils to AVOID with dogs
Ensuring safe practices while using essential oils around dogs is crucial due to their unique sensitivities. Here is a list of several essential oils from doTERRA that should either be avoided or used with extra caution for dogs:
Wintergreen Oil: Containing methyl salicylate, Wintergreen oil poses potential toxicity for dogs and should be kept at bay.
Clove Oil: As a highly concentrated oil, Clove can cause irritation to a dog's skin, mouth, and digestive system and is best avoided.
Ylang Ylang Oil: Capable of inducing excessive sedation in dogs, Ylang Ylang should be used very sparingly and with adequate ventilation.
Thyme Oil: Intense Thyme oil may provoke digestive discomfort in dogs, so ensure it’s used in minimal amounts and diluted appropriately.
Cinnamon Bark Oil: Given its potency and potential to cause skin irritation and digestive upset, it’s prudent to keep Cinnamon bark oil away from dogs.
Eucalyptus Oil: While potentially beneficial for respiratory support, Eucalyptus oil must be diluted, used in moderation, and diffused with proper ventilation for dogs.
Oregano Oil: Oregano oil, being potent, can trigger digestive issues in dogs and should be used cautiously and in well-diluted forms when needed.
Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Oil: Although recognized for its numerous benefits, Tea Tree oil can be toxic to dogs if undiluted or ingested and is best avoided.
Birch Oil: Owing to its methyl salicylate content, Birch oil can be harmful to dogs, especially if ingested, and usage near dogs should be avoided.
Citrus Oils: Oils such as Lemon, Lime, and Wild Orange can be irritants for dogs and should be used with caution, mindful that some dogs may find the scent unpleasant.
Arborvitae Oil: With the potential to cause skin irritation if applied topically to dogs, direct contact with Arborvitae oil should be avoided.
The sensitivity of dogs to essential oils can be variable, and responses may differ. Begin with low dilutions, attentively observe your dog’s response, and always consult a veterinarian if you have any doubts or queries about utilizing essential oils safely with your four-legged friends.
